Albany Pro Musica’s Jose Daniel Flores-Caraballo knows how to turn concerts into occasions, and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s daunting “All-Night Vigil” is an event in itself.

The singers of Albany Pro Musica have been warming up for a big performance. The group has spent the last 6 weeks rehearsing “All Night Vigils” by Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff.

Albany Pro Musica will be presenting an amazing work sung in Russian, Rachmaninoff’s “All-Night Vigil.” While long planned, the concert is now being presented as a statement in solidarity for the Ukrainian people.

In the fifth of 15 movements in “All-Night Vigil,” a 1915 vocal work by the composer Sergei Rachmaninoff that uses Christian texts, the unaccompanied chorus sings, translated from the Church Slavonic language of the original score, “O Lord, according to thy word in peace.”

One group, Capital Pride Singers, has begun the process of dissolving due to lack of participation and financial duress hastened by COVID.

Albany Pro Musica’s chorus and orchestra will take the stage this weekend for their annual holiday concert “The Many Moods of Christmas,” a show that was performed virtually last year.
